Shetland mead producer Viking Mead Ltd today (Thursday 27 June) launches a crowdfunding campaign to fund ambitious growth plans which include the creation of a new brewery in Voe, Shetland. See https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/viking-mead--2#/. When completed, the brewery will be capable of producing around 3000 litres of product per week.
Founder of Viking Mead, Alistair Morgan, said: “Mead is an absolutely outstanding drink with roots going back to Viking times. It’s our mission to make it global, and we want to engage with modern-day Vikings who want to join us on this adventure.
“We’ve brewed beer and wine as a hobby for many years, but it was while touring some of the Shetland islands’ ancient Norse settlements that inspiration really struck. We began researching the brewing techniques used by the islands’ ancient inhabitants, and discovered the huge significance of mead in Norse culture and mythology.
“This inspired us to bring this legendary drink to a modern audience and so Viking Mead was born.
“So far, we have focused almost exclusively on the Shetland market, but we are now confident of our product and are ready to scale up. Skald is now available for the first time in Glasgow at Valhalla’s Goat on Great Western Road. A move to new premises will give us the capacity that we need to meet the demand that we already know is out there.”
This development will also allow Alistair and his team to fulfil a wider ambition to help to tackle one of the world’s most challenging environmental issues.
“We are very conscious that pollinators – necessary for 75 per cent of food crops – are declining globally in both abundance and diversity. Bees, in particular, are thought to be necessary for the fertilisation of up to 90 per cent of the world's 107 most important human food crops.
“So as Viking Mead grows, we plan to invest a portion of our profits to establish and support a network of independent beekeepers and like-minded projects across the globe. Our beekeepers will contribute to the mission by selling us the quality raw honey needed to make exceptional mead and together we will help to tacklethis significant environmental issue.
“Viking culture has a deep respect for the natural world and all it provides and for us, mead embodies the courage, strength and wisdom of the Vikings. With this background and philosophy, our ambition is not simply to create and sell mead - we want mead to help to change the world.”
To make this journey accessible to as wide an audience as possible, funding opportunities start from £25. All participants will receive a Skald certificate and a range of merchandise to acknowledge their participation. A range of perks will be available, depending on the level of investment. These include the opportunity to be part of a very exclusive Jarls’s ‘inner circle’, participation in a Viking Experience and, when the overall target is reached, a particularly special Viking Adventure will be organised by way of celebration.
