In the heart of a cold and dark Scandinavian winter, in the stone hall of the Jarl, the feast tables are cleared and the horns of mead are passed around. Gathered by the blazing fire, inspired by the drink of the gods, the Vikings have visions of a new world – a world of opportunity and adventure….
These inspiring Norse stories come alive in the unique setting of the Shetland Islands where, once again, we are brewing this ancient drink of the gods.
Mead, and alcohol in general, was considered sacred by the Vikings and other ancient cultures. Norse mythology speaks of how the dwarves captured the wisest of all gods, Kvasir, the all-knowing, killed him, and mixed his blood with honey, creating the first mead. We haven't gone to the trouble of capturing a god but we have painstakingly created an authentic modern day Viking mead called Skald.
According to the myth, whoever drinks Kvasir's mead will gain his powers of knowledge and wisdom becoming a Skald - the old Norse term for a poet or storyteller and the custodians of Vikings history and culture
